In any given industry, workforce labor is both the biggest expense and the largest asset to a company. From the production floor to the retail storefront, your workforce keeps operations running smoothly to create a seamless supply chain. However, as demands continue to reshape the enterprise landscape, labor may not be appropriately distributed in the workspace. Whether it be in warehousing or retail, ill-distributed labor can lead to:

  • Higher turnover rates
  • Missed delivery dates
  • Overlooked compliance codes and worker safety
  • Inaccurate order fulfillment

To accommodate changing workforce sizes and evolving customer demands, several warehouses have turned to the popular and versatile modernization solution: RFID technology.

What can RFID Bring to your Operations?

According to Zebra’s 2019 Warehousing Vision Study, RFID technology was expected to grow by 6%, yet post-pandemic demands for both speed and safety have accelerated adoption in warehouses and retailers alike. Next-generation RFID solutions such as Zebra’s MotionWorks can expand operational visibility while increasing workforce productivity by…

While the bulk of COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift, it is clear that the enterprise landscape will look starkly different from what it was six months ago. In addition to numerous new health guidelines, your business may also face increasing customer demands while dealing with a shrinking workforce. Surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center show that well over half of polled Americans are uneasy about returning to the workplace. However, the 345% surge in online shopping within the past months illustrates the increasing demands for more accuracy and productivity from a much smaller manufacturing workforce.

While worker safety products such as bracelets and mobile applications can help ensure worker safety, manufacturing plants often require higher levels of safety to comply with OSHA guidelines. Consequently, additional safety items may pose more of a liability instead of promoting safety. As leaders in innovative efficiency, Avalon Integration. That’s partners with Zebra Technologies to raise productivity through compliant safety measures within a smaller workforce – all without increasing labor costs or worker strain.

Barcode scanning can be a labor-intensive job. From finding the barcode to reaching it with the scanner and capturing the barcode, it’s a process that seems easy but can become more complicated than necessary if the scanner itself can’t handle the challenges. As part of our ongoing quest to optimize operational efficiency for our customers, Avalon Integration took a close look at the scanning potential of the new Zebra MC9300, an ultra-rugged mobile computer that reflects the company’s considerable knowledge of investment in what industries need from their barcode scanners.

Let’s start by looking at what a scanner’s optimal effectiveness does for productivity:

  1. Accelerate the pace of order fulfillment.
  2. Minimize fulfillment errors (from receiving through picking and shipping).
  3. Increase inventory accuracy.
  4. Expedite user training.
  5. Reduce repetitive strain injuries.
  6. Prevent downtime from a battery or device failure.

Solve any one of the issues and you increase the user’s productivity—work faster and more accurately. Solve ALL of them and you have a barcoding power tool! That’s what we’ve discovered with the Zebra MC9300 mobile computer. From a scanning perspective, it delivers on all counts.

Capture Every Barcode

The MC9300 is powered by Zebra’s industry-leading scanning technology. PRZM Intelligent Imaging, advanced sensors, and proprietary algorithms are designed to make data capture as easy as possible. Grab 1D, 2D, and direct part mark (DPM) barcodes—even those that are hard to read. If the barcode is smudged, scratched, dirty, damaged, poorly printed, or covered with frost or shrink-wrap, you can still point, click, and capture it.

Do It on the First Try

Barcode scanning shouldn’t make your workers feel like acrobats—twisting, reaching, climbing, and bending over backward to get to the barcode. Zebra’s omnidirectional scanner means you can scan from any angle. There’s no more wasted time spent trying to precisely align the laser with the barcode. Imagine if your workers had to spend three times as long to read a barcode. What does that do to your workforce productivity?

In addition to omnidirectional scanning ease, Zebra offers four different scan engine options with the MC9300. If your scanning requires short-range or long-distance data capture, the SE4850ER scan engine lets you read from as close as 3 inches to as far as 70 feet away—perfect for warehouses, distribution centers, transportation and logistics, and manufacturing plants. The SE4750DP is a good choice for any manufacturer that utilizes DPMs. If you’re only scanning 1D barcodes, equip your MC9300 with the new SE965 scan engine; however, if you might need both 1D and 2D without extended range, Zebra also offers the SE4750 standard range scan engine.

No matter which scan engine you choose for the MC9300, your workers will be impressed with the lightning-fast speed. We also like the battery power that’s standard on Zebra’s new rugged industrial handheld. The high-capacity 7000 mAh PowerPrecision+ gives twice as long a charge as the previous MC9200 (which was still impressive). The battery charges faster and can be swapped without powering down the device. One of the features of the Mobility DNA app that comes with any of Zebra’s mobile computers is the PowerPrecision Console. One glance shows you the health and battery life so you don’t run out in the middle of a shift.

How’s your scanning efficiency handling all of your needs? If there’s room for improvement (and we suspect there is), contact us at Avalon Integration to see the ROI that the Zebra MC9300 can provide.

The Zebra TC51 mobile computer proved valuable to many of Avalon Integration’s customers—in manufacturing, warehouses, distribution centers, and for field mobility. Looking every bit like a smartphone, the TC51 provided far more ruggedness and computing power than anything in its class. Then, Zebra upped the game and launched the TC52 which delivers a whole new gold standard in enterprise-touch computing.

Our curious techs recently took a close look at Zebra’s next-gen mobile computer to see what more it can offer. Here’s what we found.

Android is a Smart OS Choice for the Zebra TC52

Let’s face it. A majority of your workers are familiar with Android. They use it on their personal technology. So, why not take advantage of this common platform and streamline the training required for enterprise use? With Android poised to gain market share—the result of both its own advances and the demise of Microsoft Windows Mobile for business use—this platform will give you ease of use, quick user adoption, a large developer community, and the higher level of security you need to protect your data.

Zebra pre-installs Mobility Extensions (Mx) on its handheld computers. This fortified Android integrates government-grade, AES-256 data encryption.

The View Is Great

The TC52 features a 5-inch display, plenty of room for viewing apps, even the graphics-intensive ones. The screen is designed to give you maximum readability, even when you’re working outside on a sunny day.

The dual-mode capacitive touchscreen lets you input data using a stylus or your finger, including one that is gloved. The fingerprint-resistant, anti-smudge coating prevents all the annoying marks that build up there.

Zebra also integrated six programmable soft keys. Program them to allow one-touch access to the most frequently used apps and features.

To keep this productivity power tool in action, Zebra incorporates a PowerPrecision+ high-capacity battery. Get 14 hours from one charge, and the warm swap innovation allows you to change the battery without powering down the device.

Image and Data Capture Are Superior

For enterprise use, the power to take photos and videos, scan barcodes, and do video calls is important. Zebra gets that. The TC52 has two cameras. The 5-megapixel front-facing camera enables video calling. The 13-megapixel rear camera provides high-resolution images, great for documenting proof-of-condition and viewing schematics to improve efficiency.

Whether you’re scanning 1D, 2D, or Digimarc barcodes or grabbing signatures or text, the integrated PRZM Intelligent Imaging feature allows for faster data capture. The TC52’s omnidirectional scanning means the user doesn’t need to precisely line up the device with the barcode, which accelerates the process. And the scanner easily reads barcodes that are scratched, damaged, poorly printed, and on an electronic screen, a real boost for your mobile workforce productivity.

The TC52 is Built to last

Zebra’s hardware is known for its ruggedness, and the TC52 is a perfect example. The unibody design presents bodyguard-level protection. IP65 and IP67 sealing keep dust, dirt, and other unwanted particles from getting to the inner workings of the mobile computer.

The touchscreen and imager window uses Corning Gorilla Glass, coated with water droplet rejection. This feature gives outstanding protection against scratching, cracking, and shattering. All of these rugged design enhancements contribute to a device that can handle drops on concrete, tumbles inside a service vehicle, exposure to water, snow, and rain, and the dusty conditions of a demanding workspace.

There’s a lot more to love about the Zebra TC52. In our next article, we’ll look at the Mobility DNA that elevates the value of this rugged industrial computer and expedites the ROI.

How much time and money are wasted searching for products, parts, tools, shipping containers, and even people? Add it up and then estimate how that time could instead contribute to productivity and profitability. No matter what you’re missing, Avalon Integration has found a solution. Find your assets in the cloud.

Let the Cloud Manage the Workflow
TC25 Cloud Manage Workflow with the help of MobiWorks

We’ve spent years working with warehouse operations, manufacturers, and distribution centers that didn’t realize how much these lost assets were costing them. In some cases, they paid to replace what they couldn’t find. More often, they paid for the labor to hunt them down.

One person realizes something is missing. He or she then asks around, disrupting other people’s workflow. Next thing you know, several workers have joined the hunt. The more valuable the asset, the larger the search group.

But remember, it’s not just time spent on the search. While your crew is on safari, the production line could be waiting, a customer’s shipment or service is delayed, a route is less efficient because it doesn’t have a full load, and so on.

When we discovered MobiWork software, our team realized we had the tools to cut out the waste here. We combined MobiWork for Asset Management with the enterprise-class rugged technology from Zebra. The result is the MWS Asset Management Solution Platform, a cloud-based approach to achieving real-time visibility of your enterprise assets.

This platform isn’t just for finding the misplaced assets. The solution enables total control over the use of them, no matter where you are. Connect to your dashboard from the cloud and here’s what you can do:

  • Proactively identify any tools or equipment that are approaching a maintenance deadline and schedule the service, avoiding downtime from responding too late.
  • Optimize routes to schedule, dispatch, and re-route with more efficiency, saving on fuel and labor costs.
  • Track your rental assets to make sure they’re maximizing usage and not sitting somewhere, draining profits.
  • Generate invoices and process payments in the field, reducing the payment cycle time.
  • Monitor labor to rein in job costs and increase workforce productivity
  • Easily generate work orders that comply with the approved format and terms.
  • Instantly update mobile inventory on vehicles as service techs use and sell parts on their routes.
  • Track shipments from origin to destination.
  • Produce up-to-date reports whenever and wherever you need them.

Pair the Right Software and Mobile Computer on a Cloud-based Platform

TC25 Courier Scanning a barcode with the help of Mobiworks

Pair the software with the right mobile computer for the job. A consumer-grade handheld won’t work in these environments. The average life of one of those tablets or smartphones is about six months. Compare that to three or more years with a purpose-built mobile computer, and you can probably see that the total cost of ownership is lower with the rugged version—as well as more secure.

The Zebra TC25 touch computer is the right choice for Avalon Integrations MWS Asset Management Solution Platform. Although it resembles a consumer smartphone, this handheld computer is much tougher. Drop it onto a concrete floor from six feet and you don’t have to worry about a cracked screen, or worse. You can even dowse it with water, leave it bumping around in a service vehicle, and the TC25 keeps working.

The TC25 also comes pre-loaded with Mobility Extensions (Mx), a fortified Android with government-grade AES-256 data encryption. As a purpose-built mobile computer, it is designed for MDM. Your IT team can remotely locate, configure, install upgrades, and lock down the device—a definite plus for improving productivity. The TC25 features two cameras (one for video calling and a high-res for documentation) and a powerful scanning engine, so it delivers the power of a 1D/2D barcode scanner/reader.
